Activity 4 – Journal Article Appraisal Due April 30, 2022 – 100 points The final assignment builds upon the concepts covered throughout this course. You will utilize knowledge about PICO question formation, health information retrieval, research design, and basic biostatistics to identify, evaluate and critically appraise medical literature. There are 2 main parts to this final assignment: 1) PICO question development; and 2) the critical appraisal of a research article. You will complete a PICO question for one of the cases below, and then complete the critical appraisal worksheet that corresponds with the case you chose to evaluate the research article for your corresponding PICO question. Thus, you will choose one case, the one article that corresponds with that case, and complete the one CASP checklist that corresponds with the article. Part 1: PICO Question Please read the following cases. After reading each case, develop a PICO question for ONE of the cases. Remember that a well-written PICO question includes the following components: Patient/Problem, Intervention, Comparison, and Outcome. After developing the PICO question, you will then search the literature to identify the highest level of evidence to answer the PICO question (hint: remember the evidence pyramid). You will need to turn in your PICO question as part of this assignment. Case 1 You are working as a public health nurse in an urban area. The majority of your work is focused on promoting interventions to reduce cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and hypertension. You are at a health fair promoting these interventions when a patient asks about exercising for people who have diabetes. Specifically, this patient is a 55 year-old male trying to determine which exercise regimen would be best for him to help control his diabetes. He is not sure if he should go to the gym and lift weights, if he should jog about 150 minutes per week, or if he should do a mix of both. Case 2 You recently started taking an antibiotic for a minor skin infection following surgery on your leg. You are concerned about developing diarrhea from the antibiotic. A friend told you that you should eat yogurt while taking the antibiotic because it will prevent you from developing diarrhea. However, you do not really like to eat yogurt, so you decide it would be best to find out if your friend’s recommendation is true before subjecting yourself to eating yogurt. Part 2: Critical Appraisal of Research Article If your PICO question was structured correctly, you should have identified one of the articles below for Case 1 and Case 2. If you did not find one of the articles below, please use the appropriate article for the next portion of this activity. Case 1 article for review – a randomized controlled trial Church TS, Blair SN, Cocreham S, et al. Effects of aerobic and resistance training on hemoglobin A1c levels in patients with type 2 diabetes: a randomized controlled trial. JAMA. 2010;304(20):2253-2262. doi:10.1001/jama.2010.1710 Case 2 article for review – systematic review and meta-analysis Patro-Golab B, Shamir R, Szajewska H. Yogurt for treating antibiotic-associated diarrhea: Systematic review and meta-analysis. Nutrition. 2015 Jun;31(6):796-800. doi: 10.1016/j.nut.2014.11.013. Please use the corresponding critical appraisal worksheet (i.e., either for RCTs or systematic reviews) to critically appraisal the research article that matches your PICO question. These worksheets are similar to the worksheet you used in Activity 2, but are more comprehensive. You will be graded on the completeness AND accuracy of the information provided in your appraisal. Additionally, this is an individual activity and, therefore, you should not work with others as you complete the critical appraisal worksheet. The grading rubric has details for the points you can earn for each portion of the assignment.
